Another word for square roots is "radicals" which is the opposite operation of exponentiation which is multiplying a number by itself a certain number of times. If the exponent is 2, you multiply a number by itself twice. The square root undoes this. In general you undo a power with a radical, and a radical can undoes a power. For example: 4 is 22 so the square root or radical of 4 is 2.
